OUR TEAM

Meet the dedicated individuals who drive Iron Ridge Operating forward.

Matt Telfer - CEO

Matthew J. Telfer - CEO

Matt has over 45 years of experience in oil and gas exploration. He began his career at Western Geophysical as a seismic analyst, then worked as a Staff Geologist for Reservoirs, Inc. At High Country Exploration, he moved up from a wellsite geologist to a prospecting geologist, generating prospects in the Williston and DJ Basins. Matt took on the role as Head Geologist for a company in the Illinois Basin and in addition to generating prospects, worked closely with the operations department in planning, drilling, completing, and producing wells.

Moving to Texas to work with a landman on the rapidly developing Austin Chalk play in 1990, he joined Amarado Oil Company as Vice President. He and his partner invested in seven different projects during the first seven years of being in Texas. These included the Karnes Trough (sold to Clayton Williams) Giddings Field (Edco Energy, UPRC, Chesapeake), Louisiana, East Texas, and Webb County by Laredo.

During this time, over 100 wells were drilled on the projects and Matt was on the forefront of horizontal drilling, wellsite work, well control, and development. He decided to form his own group of companies – including Iron Ridge Operating and an operating company – BBX Operating, LLC. He generated a Bakken Prospect in Richland County, Montana, which became the cornerstone of Continental Resources efforts in the Bakken, over 120 wells were drilled on the project.

Meanwhile, the company joint ventured to put together over 50 Austin Chalk locations in Tyler County. These were primarily drilled by Anadarko, which had bought a majority interest in the project. Further extending the field, Matt led BBX Operating to start drilling in Polk County. In addition to drilling 30 Austin Chalk wells, Matt discovered the Beech Grove Woodbine Field – a 10 MM BO and 100 BCFG accumulation developed conventionally. A 100 square mile state-of-the-art 3-D seismic program was acquired over the field area, aiding in both Woodbine and Austin Chalk development.

Matt led BBX to drill several additional Woodbine in the Beech Grove area over the past few years, but with the outstanding results of new drilling in the Austin Chalk (horizontal drilling combined with hydraulic fracturing) the focus has turned back to developing the Chalk. The company’s position at Beech Grove is offset and on trend with a well drilled by Zarvona in 2023, that is expected to make over 800,000 BO and 11 BCFG.

Matt holds a B.S. in Geological Sciences and completed Masters level coursework from Binghamton University, where he is a Distinguished Alumnus. He has been a Distinguished Lecturer for the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Most recently he spoke at the Annual Convention of SIPES discussing The Austin Chalk Trend of Texas – 100+ Years and Still Going Strong.

Ian Williammee - Geoscience

Ian Williammee - Geoscience

With over 16 years of experience in the Oil and Gas industry, Ian Williammee brings a robust technical background in geology, petrophysics, and reserves evaluation. He has extensive expertise in East Texas and the Gulf Coast Trend, with a focus on the Austin Chalk, Eagle Ford, Woodbine, and Haynesville / Bossier formations. An expert at integrating legacy and modern datasets, Ian has identified multiple actionable prospects within historic areas of interest and supported successful fundraising efforts for these foundational opportunities. Ian began his career in June 2008 with BBX Operating, working on company-operated wellsites in East Texas, where he gained hands-on experience and provided geological support, including geosteering for an Austin Chalk drilling program. He participated in a multi-year, multi-disciplinary effort to collect and interpret cuttings, core, LAS, and seismic data, building a geologic framework and depositional model to enhance understanding of the combined Woodbine-Austin Chalk petroleum system. Ian graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from the State University of New York at Binghamton, with additional specialization in Geographic Information Systems.

John Gaines CFO

John Gaines - CFO

John joined Iron BBX in 2007. Prior to joining Iron Ridge Operating, he was the CFO for Riata Energy in Amarillo, Texas (now Sand Ridge Energy). He has over 25 years of financial management experience and has performed key roles for both small and large companies. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Business Administration from Westminster College.

Rob Love.jpg

Rob Love - VP of Drilling Operations

Rob serves as Iron Ridge Operating's Vice President of Operations, overseeing all engineering and field operations. He leverages his 25 plus years of managing staff, budgets and all aspects of daily operations to ensure each project is completed safely and economically. Rob was previously Vice President of Operations for Tellurian, Inc.

He began his career working for Baker Hughes INTEQ running Measurement While Drilling (MWD) tools and as a Directional Driller. He then worked for Continental Resources in engineering and management positions of increasing authority. Rob was hired by Iron Ridge Operating, in the early days of their activity, to run a growing multi-well drilling and completions program in East Texas. He oversaw extensive drilling operations throughout the trend, and came up with innovative solutions for completing very high-volume Austin Chalk wells. He then accepted a position at Southwestern Energy, at their Operations Supervisor in their fast-paced, muti-rig Fayetteville horizontal drilling play in Arkansas. At Tellurian, Rob drilled deep Haynesville wells just an hour north of BBX’s East Texas position. The Haynesville wells are very similar to Austin Chalk wells in terms of depth, horizontal reach and multi-stage fracturing techniques.

Rob holds a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering from Colorado School of Mines. In his spare time, he enjoys hunting with his wife and twin daughters, as well as helping local landowners with Wildlife Land Management.
